This Boeing
767-323 (ER) of American Airlines just touched
down after a long haul flight from Chicago O'Hare. In
front of the runway, three of four PAPIs can be seen.
The Precision Approach Path Indicators gives the pilot a visual indication of how the aircraft is located on
the approach profile. In
the background, the ground-based navaid Stockholm
Arlanda VOR (VHF omni directional radio range) can be
seen.
On the wings of the Boeing 767, you can see the deployed
spoilers. Spoilers are devices designed specifically to
reduce lift (spoilers also increase drag). They extend
from the surface of the wing into the air stream. These
devices are helpful during landing and rejected takeoff.
In this application they reduce lift, putting more
weight onto the wheels - greater weight on the wheels
improves braking.
